Developing a WWW Resource on Arid Soils of the US and Israel

Proposal Abstract
Good management of soil resources requires understnading the complex nature of soils. The fragility of desert environments makes the management of ardic soils particularly important. If aridic soils are not managed appropriately, they can be so damaged that even decades of careful use cannot reclaim them. With this in mind, Carla Long Casler, Principal Investigator, Dr. Eyal Ben-Dor, soil scientist at Tel-Aviv University, Michael Haseltine, Web Architect, and Joseph Tabor, soil consultant, undertook the development of a Web site that would serve as a resource of soil information for soil scientists, farmers, land developers, and policy makers for planning uses in arid lands which will conserve this valuable natural resource. This demonstration project, besides developing introductory and background information, adapting publications for presentation on the Web site, and compiling useful links to other Web sites, also experimented with presenting translations in Hebrew on the Web site.
