Maryam Niamir-Fuller

Maryam Niamir-Fuller received a PhD in Rangeland Management from the University of Arizona in 1987, and worked as a consultant early in her career, including as a researcher on a rural development project in southern Sudan and Chief of Party for a livestock development project in Senegal, both funded by USAID.  She worked for the United Nations System in various positions from 1993 until 2015 when she retired as Director of the Global Environment Facility division of the United Nations Environment Programme. Her publications include “Managing Mobility: the legitimization of transhumance” (1999), “Co-existence of Wildlife and Livestock” (2012), and more recently several journal publications on pastoralism, rangelands and sustainable development. She is currently a consultant focusing on sustainable development issues both in the USA and internationally, and Vice Chair of the International Support Group for the designation of the International Year on Rangelands and Pastoralism (IYRP).
